We skipped school.

We skipped school ..errr... I mean...we went on a field trip. YAY!

Sometimes you just need a break from it all and take a moment to breath. We needed a day to have fun and get away from it all. So we tossed the school books and schedule out the window (just for the day) and went out on the boat with the grandparents.

Look at the beautiful sky and still water that we were blessed with. The view was beautiful. The kids tried to brave the 70 degree water but chickened out. Wimps! LOL Just kidding. I didn't even place a pinky toe in the water; at least they tried. This gal stayed in the boat. hahahah. The kids were mesmerized as the boat cut through the gentleness of the water. The sky was such a beautiful blue with puffy cotton candy clouds. The kids made sand castles as I soaked in the sun light. Ahhhhh!!!!! Relaxing.

Can I just say we all need these "get away moments". Just a moment to step away from the stresses of life and have some fun with the kids. They'll remember this fun day.

Kids want our time not our gifts.

God showed off with the beautiful canvas He painted for us that day. It was so beautiful. The pictures do not do it justice.

I'm reminded of this verse...

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." (Psalm 19:1)

When was the last time you let your kids skip school for a fun family day? Let me know in the comments below. Please share!

  1. We do this, too! I hadn't planned to take fall break with our surrounding school district, but we decided we needed a break. Most of it was spent in low-key down time, but we did have an excursion to the zoo that was loads of fun!

  5. I remember my mom letting us take periodic "mental health days" in high school (provided we weren't missing something important like a test!) and I so loved that. Sometimes you just need to decompress and come back to it all later!

  6. We actually take a whole week in October. Growing up, I had to have that "perfect attendance" certificate. And the best grades. The list goes on. I turned out pretty OK :) but I want my daughter to focus on other things in life. Because really, other things are more important.

    1. I agree. Life skills are very important. Seeing and touching and learning hands on is a priority!

  7. I love this! We probably skip "school" more than we should... that is the beauty of homeschooling though, right? LOL. That view is gorgeous for sure!

  8. I am a true believer that kids learn by DOING! Taking them out and doing things with them is something they're much more likely to remember than sitting at a desk. I agree, kids do want our attention and time more than anything else.

  10. I love this idea, Starla. It reminds me of un schooling and that learning doesn't have to take place in the classroom. Plus, your pictures and magnificent.

  11. We call these mental health days, too. Sometimes you just really need one! I remember my mom keeping us out of school once to take us to the wax museum of all places. It's one of my best memories!

  13. I kept my son home today, but not just for fun. He's not feeling the greatest. I could have sent him, but I think he needs a little rest. We all do!

  16. Great post! We also take field trips at least twice a month but often more often. We have plans for Friday to go the Apple Festival. Sometimes the best days are days without books. As long as we are staying on target with our studies, time away keeps home schooling fun and educational. That's what its all about, isn't it? Be blessed!

  18. We are doing preschool this year and we only "do" school a couple days a week, so there really hasn't been a need to skip school yet. I do plan on letting my kids do that every once in a while though as they get older. :-)
Looks like you had a beautiful day out on the boat.
